Short-beaked Echidna
Appearance: Small spiny monotreme with a long snout. Echidnas have powerful limbs with long claws for digging.
Habitat: Widespread throughout Australia, from alpine areas to the outback deserts.
Diet: Echidnas use their long, sticky tongue to collect ants and termites.

Interesting Echidna Facts:
Echidnas are the only mammals aside from the platypus that lay eggs. Baby echidnas are called puggles. They hatch from the egg after ten days then live inside the mother's pouch for about 50 days, feeding on her milk.

The coin is part of a delightful series celebrating Australia’s land life, Land Series that includes:

  • Wombat
  • Bilby
  • Koala
  • Frilled Neck Lizard
  • Yellow-footed Rock Wallaby
  • Short-beacked Echidna

Design
The coloured reverse portrays an echidna in his natural environment.
The Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II appears on the Australian legal tender coin’s obverse.
