Maple Leaf
The maple leaf is the characteristic leaf of the maple tree, and is the most widely recognized national symbol of Canada. At the beginning of the eighteenth century, the settlements located in New France had attained a population of about 18.000. By this time, the maple leaf had been adopted as an emblem by the French Canadians along the Saint Lawrence River. Its popularity with French Canadians continued and was reinforced when, at the inaugural meeting of the Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste in 1834, the maple leaf was one of numerous emblems proposed to represent the society. Speaking in its favour, Jacques Viger, the first mayor of Montreal, described the maple as “the king of our forest; ... the symbol of the Canadian people”. The Royal Standard of Canada showing a sprig of three maple leaves as part of the design. The flag of Canada, featuring a stylized maple leaf in the centre.

Design

The reverse of the coin features the image by artist Emily Damstra and showcases the picturesque beauty of the sugar maple tree (Acer saccharum) on a bright summer day. The unique perspective creates the impression of standing at the base of an iconic Canadian tree, and looking up at the engraved trunks and branches that reach ever higher into the cloudless sky. Inspired by the natural phenomenon of crown shyness, the coloured maple canopy is marked by thin borders of light that form a distinctive shape among the leaves, where the shine of a proof finish stands in for sunlight. On the bottom of the reverse, the inscriptions: “2019” - the year of issue and “CANADA” - the issuing country. The obverse of the coin portrays the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions: “ELIZABETH II” – the name of the Queen, “D.G.REGINA” – Dei Gratia Regina and “30 DOLLARS” – the face value.
