Bigbelly Seahorse (Hippocampus abdominalis)
Colour: Variegated shades of yellow, brown, orange, white, grey or mottled. Often colouration adapts to suit their marine surroundings.
Habitat: Shallow water sea grasses and sponge gardens in south-eastern Australia and New Zealand.
Diet: The Bigbelly Seahorse feeds on small crustaceans swallowed whole through a tube-like snout.

Intereasting Seahors Facts:
It is the male, not the female seahorse that becomes pregnant, carries eggs and gives birth to juveniles.
Seahorses have a prehensile tail which allows them to hold onto objects such as sea grasses and sponges.

The coin is part of a delightful series celebrating Australia’s sea life, Ocean Series that includes:

  • White Shark
  • Bigbelly Seahorse
  • Longfin Bannerfish
  • Biscuit Star
  • Clown Fish
  • Bottlenose Dolphin
The coloured reverse portrays a bigbelly seahorse in his natural marine habitat.
The Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II appears on the Australian legal tender coin’s obverse.
