More info

Biscuit Star (Pentagonatser duebeni)
Colour: Bright yellow, orange or red plates on the upper surface, separated by white or yellow lines.
Habitat: Rocky reefs and sheltered bays from Shark Bay in Western Australia, around Australia's southern and eastern coasts to the southern coast of Queensland.
Diet: Biscuit stars feed on a variety of organisms including sea squirts, sponges, bryozoans (lace coral) and algae.

Interesting Sea Star Facts:
Sea stars have no heart or brain. Instead they have a unique vascular system, and system of interconnecting nerves. An 'eye' on the end of each arm detects light and dark.

The coin is part of a delightful series celebrating Australia’s sea life, Ocean Series that includes:

  • White Shark
  • Bigbelly Seahorse
  • Longfin Bannerfish
  • Biscuit Star
  • Clown Fish
  • Bottlenose Dolphin

Design
The coloured reverse portrays a biscuit star in his natural habitat.
The Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II appears on the Australian legal tender coin’s obverse.
