The coin's reverse features the taniwha, subject of many Maori myths and legends, portrayed emerging from turbulent waters which were said to be its favoured habitat. The ferocity and detailed characteristics of the taniwha have been beautifully illustrated by Dave Burke in this Gold Proof coin. In the top of the coin's reverse, the inscription: "Tekau Tara" – the face value in Maori and on the bottom, the inscription: "Ten Dollars" – the face value in English. On the coin's obverse the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions: "New Zealand" – the issue country and "2017" – the issue year.
