Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster

Reports of a mysterious creature in Loch Ness, Scotland, date back to the 6th century, but the legend of the Loch Ness Monster, called "Nessie," received a boost in the early 1930s, thanks to multiple sightings and photographic proof.

In 1934 an English surgeon named R. Kenneth Wilson took what is now known as the "Surgeon's Photo," supposedly showing a head and neck above the water and indicating an enormous creature. Thousands of sightings and innumerable attempts to identify and picture the "monster" have been recorded since then, despite repeated assertions from scientists that no such creature exists.

Loch Ness is deep, dark and murky, about 24 miles long and 700 feet deep in places, which has helped keep the legend of the monster alive. However, a high-tech sonar sweep of the entire lake in 2003, sponsored by the BBC, found no monster.

A beautiful coin depicting the legendary monster

The Mint of Poland has recently released a coin depicting Nessie, the legendary monster. According to the Certificate of Authenticity included with the coin, the coin weighs 32.90 grams (just over 1 Oz), has a diameter of 41 mm and a Black Proof quality.

The reverse of the coin depicts the monster with half of its body out of the water. Two men on a boat appear terrified when they see the monster, but it's unclear whether the monster was angry and meant to scare them or whether it was simply checking them out. The rest of the monster’s body is submerged, but the blue resin fill on the coin allows it to be seen.

Most likely, the mint created the upper portion of the coin and the bottom frame in High Relief, then filled the remaining area with blue resin, allowing us to see what is beneath it, in this case, the bottom part of the monster's body. This is a truly unique and fascinating technique!

The background has a lovely color scheme with shades of blue, purple, and pink. The sky is uncolored and has a special finish that gives the impression of a misty scene. The design incorporates many other details, such as water ripples, tree canopies, and a tower in the backdrop.

The effigy of Queen Elizabeth II and some issue details are included on the obverse of the coin. The coin has a face value of 2$ and is legal currency in Niue Island; only 600 pieces were minted globally!
