Carpe Diem
Carpe diem is a Latin aphorism, usually translated "seize the day", taken from book 1 of the Roman poet Horace's work Odes (23 BC). Perhaps the first written expression of the concept is the advice given by Siduri to Gilgamesh, telling him to forgo his mourning and embrace life although some scholars see it as simply urging Gilgamesh to abandon his mourning, “reversing the liminal rituals of mourning and returning to the normal and normative behaviors of Mesopotamian society”.

Design

The reverse of the coin features the wonderful image of the Death holding the incredible Hourglass insert, remembering us that time is precious and we all have our days counted so we should seize the day. All around the reverse, the inscription: “CARPE DIEM” – the name of the coin. The obverse of the coin features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions: “NIUE ISLAND” – the issuing country, “5 DOLLARS” – the face value, “ELIZABETH II” – the name of the Queen, “Ag999” – the fineness of the Silver, “2018” – the year of issue and “2oz” – the weight of the coin.
