Poppy
Papaver rhoeas (common names include common poppy, corn poppy, corn rose, field poppy, Flanders poppy or red poppy) is an annual herbaceous species of flowering plant in the poppy family, Papaveraceae. This poppy is notable as an agricultural weed (hence the common names including “corn” and “field”) and after World War I as a symbol of dead soldiers. Before the advent of herbicides, P. rhoeas sometimes was so abundant in agricultural fields that it could be mistaken for a crop. However, the only species of Papaveraceae grown as a field crop on a large scale is Papaver somniferum, the opium poppy.

Design

The reverse of the coin presents the image by artist Kerri Weller and combines two of the most powerful, evocative symbols of sacrifice and remembrance. A slightly stylized Papaver rhoeas blooms at the centre of the selectively coloured design, where a subtle translucence allows the coin’s gold surface to radiate light from within the crimson-tinted petals. Engraved around this central poppy are four additional poppy blooms and a bud; together, the six poppies represent the six continents that were involved in the First World War (1914-1918). Three leaves complete the swirling floral arrangement, whose motion alludes to the maelstrom of war, while a multitude of grave markers help convey the magnitude of the loss of life during the four-year conflict. All around the coin, the inscriptions: “CANADA” – the issuing country, “200 DOLLARS” – the face value and “2018” – the year of issue. The obverse of the coin depicts the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions: “ELIZABETH II” – the name of the Queen and “D · G · REGINA” – Dei Gratia Regina.
