Maple Leaf
The maple leaf is the characteristic leaf of the maple tree, and is the most widely recognized national symbol of Canada. At the beginning of the eighteenth century, the settlements located in New France had attained a population of about 18,000. By this time, the maple leaf had been adopted as an emblem by the French Canadians along the Saint Lawrence River. Since 1979, the Royal Canadian Mint has produced gold, silver, platinum, and palladium bullion coins, which are officially known as Maple Leafs, as geometric maple leaves are stamped on them.

Design

The reverse of the coin presents a finely detailed engraving that captures the natural beauty of sugar maple (Acer saccharum) leaves in all their intricate beauty. A true-to-life recreation of the leaf’s silhouette. The design also presents the inscriptions: “200 DOLLARS” – the face value, “30YEARS/ANS” – the years of anniversary, and “2018” – the year of issue. The obverse of the coin depicts the gilded effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions: “ELIZABETH II” – the name of the Queen, “CANADA” – the issue country and “D · G · REGINA” – Dei Gratia Regina.
