Maple Leaf
The maple leaf is the characteristic leaf of the maple tree, and is the most widely recognized national symbol of Canada. At the beginning of the eighteenth century, the settlements located in New France had attained a population of about 18,000. By this time, the maple leaf had been adopted as an emblem by the French Canadians along the Saint Lawrence River. Since 1979, the Royal Canadian Mint has produced gold, silver, platinum, and palladium bullion coins, which are officially known as Maple Leafs, as geometric maple leaves are stamped on them.

The reverse of the coin features a swirling cluster of maple leaves, designed by Canadian artist Lisa Thomson-Khan. Together, the unique shape, dynamic design, and mirror-like sheen of the proof finish lend this stunning image a three-dimensional quality that makes it feel as though you’re holding a whirlwind in the palm of your hand. The coin’s reverse and obverse share a unique relationship not only in their convex/concave shape but also through the reproduction of one of the leaves in a repeating pattern on the obverse. Combined with the obverse’s dome-like concave shape, this mesmerizing pattern makes for a dazzling effect. All around the reverse, the inscriptions: “50 DOLLARS” – the face value, “2017” – the year of issue and “CANADA” – the issuing country. The obverse of the coin depicts the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions: “ELIZABETH II” – the name of the Queen and “D · G · REGINA” – Dei Gratia Regina.
