The coin's reverse shows a koala with a young animal on its back as it climbs up the branch of a eucalyptus tree. Koalas are mainly herbivores and feed primarily on eucalyptus leaves. They are known for their laid-back and sleepy nature, spending up to 20 hours a day resting and sleeping. The design includes the inscription "KOALA" - the name of the coin, the year-date and The Perth Mint's 'P' mintmark. The obverse of the coin shows the Effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions: "ELIZABETH II" – the name of the Queen, "AUSTRALIA" – the issuing country and "1 DOLLAR" – the face value.
