More info

Tasmania is both an Australian state and an island of the same name. It is located 150 miles south of the eastern side of the island continent, being separated from it by Bass Strait. The state of Tasmania includes the island of Tasmania, the 26th largest island in the world, and other surrounding islands. The state has an estimated population of 500,000 with almost half located in the greater Hobart area.
Tasmania is promoted as the "Natural State" and the "Island of Inspiration" owing to its large and relatively unspoiled natural environment. Legally, almost 37% of the land in Tasmania is in reserves, National Parks and World Heritage Sites. The island measures 226 miles long from the northernmost point to the southernmost point and 190 miles from west to east. The capital and largest city is Hobart.

The coin is part of a delightful series celebrating Australia’s eight mainland States and Territories. These eight colorful dollars comprise the Celebrate Australia Program. Each coin commemorates one of the eight Australian states and territories. The artistic and skillfully rendered design of each coin encompasses three distinct elements unique to each state or territory:

  • An iconic animal of that state or territory;
  • The official floral emblem;
  • A significant landmark or monument

Celebrate Australia Capital Territory $1 packageThe eight different states and territories represented include:

  • Australian Capital Territory
  • New South Wales
  • Northern Territory
  • Queensland
  • South Australia
  • Tasmania
  • Victoria
  • Western Australia
The coin’s reverse combines struck and coloured pictorial elements representing Tasmania. As well as a coloured composition of Cradle Mountain and the icy waters of Lake Dove, the design includes a Tasmanian Devil, the State faunal emblem, and the flowers of Tasmanian Bluegum, its floral emblem.
Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the coin bears the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse.
