CHARLES DARWIN
Charles Robert Darwin (1809 - 1882) was one of the most influential men in world history. He was an English naturalist who realised and demonstrated that all species of life have evolved over time from common ancestors through the process he called natural selection. On the Origin of Species set out the theory of natural selection, the idea that certain animals of a species, being better adapted than others to their environment, would be more likely to survive and breed so that, over time, the species would evolve bearing the favourable characteristics. Flying in the face of common wisdom and religious convention, Darwin's theory may not have been universally accepted, but changed the scientific world forever.

Design
Marking Charles Darwin’s 200th birthday and coinciding with the 150 the anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species in 1859, this commemorative coin is struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality. The coin’s reverse depicts a coloured portrait of Darwin at the age of 30 and an image of him in his 60s. As well as HMS Beagle, the design also portrays Darwin’s signature and the inscription CHARLES DARWIN 200TH BIRTHDAY 12 FEBRUARY 2009. The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark also appears on the reverse. The coin, which is issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu, portrays the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse.
