Bald Eagle
The bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), American national bird, is the only eagle unique to North America. The bald eagle's scientific name signifies a sea eagle with a white head. At one time, the word "bald" meant "white," not hairless. Bald eagles are found throughout most of North America, from Alaska and Canada to northern Mexico.
The Bald Eagle is an opportunistic feeder which subsists mainly on fish, which it swoops down and snatches from the water with its talons. It builds the largest nest of any North American bird and the largest tree nests ever recorded for any animal species, up to 4 meters (13 ft) deep, 2.5 meters (8.2 ft) wide, and one metric ton (1.1 tons) in weight. Sexual maturity is attained at the age of four to five years.

The Fascinating Wildlife series is composed by five coins:

  • Bald Eagle
  • Giant Panda
  • Koala
  • Cotton-top Tamarin
  • Macaco
