The reverse of the coin depicts a detailed coloured illustration of the Piwakawaka, also known as the fantail due to its fan-like tail feathers. The bird is very active and has a distinctive fluttering flight. It feeds on insects and is often found in gardens and wooded areas. The Maori people of New Zealand consider piwakawaka to be a sign of good luck and fortune. On the reverse, the inscriptions: "ONE DOLLAR" – the face value and "PIWAKAWAKA RHIPIDURA FULIGINOSA"– the name of the coin.
