The coin's reverse features the taniwha, subject of many Maori myths and legends, portrayed emerging from turbulent waters which were said to be its favoured habitat. The ferocity and detailed characteristics of the taniwha have been beautifully illustrated by Dave Burke in this Gold Proof coin. In the top of the coin's reverse, the inscription "Kotahi Rau e Rima Tekau Tara" – the face value in Maori and on the bottom, the inscription "One Hundred and Fifty Dollars" – the face value in English. On the coin's obverse the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions: "Elizabeth" – the Queen's name, "New Zealand" – the issue country and "2017" – the issue year.
