More info

Amber Road
The Amber Road was an ancient trade route for the transfer of amber from coastal areas of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. Prehistoric trade routes between Northern and Southern Europe were defined by the amber trade. As an important commodity, sometimes dubbed “the gold of the north”, amber was transported from the North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts overland by way of the Vistula and Dnieper rivers to Italy, Greece, the Black Sea, Syria and Egypt over a period of thousands of years.

Design

The reverse of the coin features the wonderful image of the European side of the globe, with a beautiful amber line to symbolize the amber road. On top of the reverse, the inscription: “HISTORIC TRADE ROUTES” – the name of the series. On the bottom, the inscription: “AMBER ROAD” – the name of the coin. On the right of the coin, the inscription: “2016” – the year of issue. The obverse of the coin depicts the effigy of Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions: “ELIZABETH II” - the name of the Queen, “5000 FRANCS CFA” – the face value, “REPUBLIC OF CAMEROON” – the issuing country.
