Arctic Char
As their name implies, arctic char thrive in the cold waters of the sub- polar  regions and are to be found across northern Europe, Russia and North America. Like their fellow salmonid the brown trout, char feature sea run populations (analogous to sea trout), and  freshwater resident populations  (akin to brown trout), albeit that sea run char only occur in the northernmost part of their range; above 65 degrees latitude. There are around 340 separate populations in the British Isles and they are often described as ‘remnants of the ice age’ perhaps because of their association with the Arctic and the fact that they (along with other species including trout and grayling) populated our waters soon after the glaciers retreated around 12,000 years ago. They arrived as sea-run char, and then subsequently  lost their sea migratory tendencies;  becoming freshwater resident populations, occupying mainly  the deep lakes of Scotland, Ireland, North Wales and the Lake District.

The reverse design by Canadian artist Curtis Atwater features the Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) towards the end of its migratory journey, from the saline waters along the Arctic coastline to the freshwater rivers and lakes of Northern Canada. The engraved background offers an underwater view of this distinctive species as two Arctic char hover just beneath the water’s surface, while a third in the foreground remains close to the pebble and gravel-lined riverbed. Selective colour brings to life the spotted, bright orange tint of this spawning adult, while intricate engraving offers a detailed view of its fins and upwardly protruding lower jaw.
