More info

In Irish mythology, Manannan mac Lir was the god of the sea and weather. Normally he is considered one of the Túatha Dé Danann, although some traditions want him older than them. He was also considered the sovereign of the underworld, king of Mag Mell and Tír na nÓg. His real name was Orbsen or Oirbsen. The name Manannan derives from an archaic name of the Isle of Man, while its patronymic mac Lir had a metaphorical meaning of "son of the sea": genealogies have handed down that his father was Allód, and not - as one might think - Lir of the famous story of the Sons of Lir.

The reverse of the coin depicts a very detailed and finely engraved shape of a Celtic Cross with the image of King Manannan holding ist shield. On the top oft he reverse, the inscriptions "MANANNAN 1ST KING OF MANN" – the name of the coin. The obverse of the coin depicts the effegy of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions: "QUEEN ELIZABETH II" – the name of the Queen, "ISLE OF MAN" – the issuing country, "2019" – the year of issue and "FIVE POUNDS" – the face value.
