The Australian Capital Territory
The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) is the capital territory of the Commonwealth of Australia and its smallest self-governing internal territory. It is an inland enclave in New South Wales, situated in bushland.
The ACT was conceived during the Federation conventions of the late 19th century as a neutral location for a new national capital. This was because of fierce rivalry between Melbourne and Sydney, each claiming the right to be the national capital. Territory was transferred to the Commonwealth by the state of New South Wales in 1911, and construction of the capital, Canberra, began in 1913.

The coin is part of a delightful series celebrating Australia’s eight mainland States and Territories. These eight colorful dollars comprise the Celebrate Australia Program. Each coin commemorates one of the eight Australian states and territories. The artistic and skillfully rendered design of each coin encompasses three distinct elements unique to each state or territory:

  • An iconic animal of that state or territory;
  • The official floral emblem;
  • A significant landmark or monument

The coin’s reverse combines struck and coloured pictorial elements representing the Australian Capital Territory. As well as a coloured illustration of Australia’s Parliament House, situated on Canberra’s Capital Hill, the design includes a Royal Bluebell, the Territory’s floral emblem, and a Gang-gang Cockatoo, its faunal emblem.
Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the coin bears the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse.
