Grizzly Bear
The grizzly bear (Ursus arctos ssp.) is a large population of the brown bear inhabiting North America. Scientists generally do not use the name grizzly bear but call it the North American brown bear. Multiple morphological forms sometimes recognized as subspecies exist, including the mainland grizzly (Ursus arctos horribilis), Kodiak bear (U. a. middendorffi), peninsular grizzly (U. a. gyas), and the recently extinct California grizzly (U. a. californicus) and Mexican grizzly bear (U. a. nelsoni). On average bears near the coast tend to be larger while inland grizzlies tend to be smaller. The Ussuri brown bear (U. a. lasiotus) inhabiting Russia, Northern China, and Korea is sometimes referred to as the black grizzly, although it is a different subspecies from the bears in America.

The reverse of the coin designed by Jori van der Linde features a side-profile view of a grizzly bear at the edge of a salmon-rich river, all re-imagined in the style of mosaic art. Just like real mosaic tile art, the larger image is formed by different-sized “segments” that are defined by engraved lines and clad in luminous colours—save for the silver proof shine of the rocks that have been “polished” by the fastmoving water. Mosaic Colour technology mimics the appearance of light filtering through each coloured piece as the eye moves from the water’s glassy hues to the more vibrant colours of the spawning salmon, and the opaque colours of the grizzly bear’s fur. The obverse of the coin depicts the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions: “ELIZABETH II” – the name of the Queen, “CANADA” – the issuing country, “2018” – the year of issue, “D·G·REGINA” – Dei Gratia Regina and “20 DOLLARS” – the face value.
