Nathan M. Rothschild
Nathan Mayer Rothschild (16 September 1777 – 28 July 1836) was a London financier and one of the founders of the international Rothschild family banking dynasty. He made a fortune in trading bills of exchange through a banking enterprise begun in 1805. Nathan Mayer Rothschild took a leading part in managing and financing the subsidies that the British government transferred to its Allies like Austria and Russia during the Napoleonic Wars. His four brothers helped him to coordinate activities across the continent, and the family developed a network of agents, shippers and couriers to transport gold (and information) across Europe.
This private intelligence service enabled Nathan Mayer Rothschild to receive in London the news of Wellington’s victory at the Battle of Waterloo a full day ahead of the government’s official messengers. Nathan started to sell his shares at the London Stock Exchange market, quickly followed by the other traders, believing that Rothschild had information that Waterloo had been lost. Prices of the shares dropped dramatically and Nathan Mayer Rothschild bought a large quantity of the shares shortly before it was announced that Napoleon had been defeated in Waterloo, and Nathan Mayer Rothschild had made a very big fortune because the prices of the shares increased immediately after this breaking news.
