Niigata is located on Japan’s main land on the coast of the Sea of Japan. The major industry in Niigata is agriculture. Especially Niigata is famous for its rice production, ranking second after Hokkaido among prefectures, and also famous for Japanese sake. In winter, this area is hit by heavy snowfall. Japanese crested ibis is a special natural monument of Japan and an internationally protected bird. The scientific name of this bird is Nipponia Nippon. Sadogashima Island is famous for gold mine. Gold was mined from four hundred years ago until twenty years ago.

To mark the 60th Anniversary of Enforcement of the Local Autonomy Law, the Japan Mint launched "Japan 47 Prefectures Coin Program" in 2008. In this program, will be issued silver colorized coins of 47 prefectures in Japan for several years (an 8-year series). Obverse is each prefecture's own design.
