The Collegiate Church of St Peter at Westminster, popularly referred to as Westminster Abbey, is a large, Gothic church, in London, located just to the west of the Palace of Westminster. It is the traditional place of coronation and burial site for English, later British and currently for monarchs of the Commonwealth Realms.
The Abbey was the site of the Royal Wedding between Princess Anne & Captain Mark Phillips in 1973, Prince Andrew & Sarah Ferguson in 1986, and the wedding between Prince William of Wales and Catherine Middleton on April 29, 2011.
On September 6, 1997, Princess Diana's funeral took place in Westminster Abbey, even though she was interred on a small island in the middle of a lake near Althorp estate in Northamptonshire.
