At the inaugural New Zealand Rugby Football Union meeting in 1893 Tom Ellison, a member of the 1888 New Zealand Native Rugby team, proposed a uniform consisting of a black jersey with a silver fern. From that moment on, the silver fern on a black background became an inspirational symbol now synonymous with the team known as the All Blacks.
The overwhelming success of the All Blacks is intertwined with the strong values they represent: Heritage, Commitment, Power, Respect, Mana, and Inspiration. The mystique and power of the All Blacks legend has been passed down for generations - from the image of the silver fern on the distinctive black jersey to the heritage of prize-winning rugby.
The chant of ‘All Blacks, All Blacks, All Blacks’ has been heard around the world for over a century, and the power and spirit of this team is never more apparent than when laying down the challenge to a respected opponent with the traditional pre-game Haka.

The coin sits in a striking black acrylic presentation panel which features the values of the team recurring in a stylised print. The innovative panel design provides a stunning standalone display option, or alternatively, the coin and acrylic panel look distinctly ‘All Blacks’ when presented inside their classic black leatherette case.

The coin’s reverse presents a black face with a repeating fern pattern in low-relief. The coin is unmistakably All Blacks, and the black background is given even more impact with the fern design rendered in low-relief and clearly visible when viewed from different angles. Shining through in the centre of the coin is the ‘one dollar’ denomination and the official All Blacks logo shown in the strength of pure silver.
On obverse the Raphael Maklouf effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the 2011 year-date.
