PEOPLE REPUBLIC OF CHINA 60th Anniversary Silver Coin 2$ Niue 2009

October 1st 2009 will mark the 60th Anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. This coin has been specially issued to celebrate that anniversary. It features three of China's world renowned achievements: extraordinary economic growth over the past 30 years; great success in hosting the 2008 Olympic Games; and impressive achievements in space technology.

More details

99.95 €

Engraved relief also on the reverse of the coin highlights China's three great achievements:

  • A dragon with the Yuan symbol represents China's great economic growth. Over the past thirty years China's booming economy has been the marvel of the world. Its GDP grew an annual average of 9.67 percent from 1978 through to 2006, which was much higher than the 3.3 percent of the world economy. The per-capita disposable income of urban residents in China rose from 343 yuan in 1978 to 11,795 yuan in 2006 — a multiplication of over 34 times.
  • The Olympic flame represents China's great success in hosting the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. At the closing ceremony, president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Jacques Rogge declared the event a "truly exceptional Games". These Olympics were also a source of national pride for China.
  • An astronaut represents China's great progress in space technology. China was the third nation to achieve human spaceflight when Yang Liwei was launched into space in a Chinese-made spacecraft, the Shenzhou 5, on October 15, 2003.
