Dragons have been worshiped in China for thousands of years. In the Chinese calendar the year 2012 is known as the year of the dragon. Elegant Dragon Filigree collector coin is one of Mint of Finland’s Year of the Dragon collector coins.

The main focus of this spectacular coin is a delicate dragon symbol made of silver filigree. Filigree is a delicate kind of jewel work made with twisted threads usually of silver or other alloys. The silver wire is not much bigger than the thickness of a hair so making the filigree is very intricate, requiring fine attention to detail and steady hands. The filigree technique has been used in jewelry making for thousands of years but it has never been used in coin minting before.

The second Silver Coin created using the fine jewellers art known as filigree. Dedicated to Lunar Year of the Dragon (2012), the crown-sized coin is struck from 20.5 grams of 99.9% fine silver. In the centre of the Dragon Filigree coin, ultra-fine silver thread forms the Chinese character representing the word dragon signifying courage and strength. This technique, used in a wide variety of cultures since Ancient times to create objects of beauty, gives a lacey appearance to the Dragon motif. Framing the central design on the reverse are a Dragon and the inscription for the Year of the Dragon, while on the obverse is the effigy of Queen Elizabeth, the country and year of issue and the nominal face value.
