THE ORANGUTAN
The Orangutan is characterised by its ape-like shape, shaggy red fur, long arms and grasping hands and feet.
As its low reproductive rate and the long period taken to reach maturity, the Orangutans are highly vulnerable to environmental threats.
The word orangutan means "man of the forest" in the Malay language. As its habitats are being usurped by man, the orangutan's population is decreasing and it is in grave danger of extinction.
Due to the commercial logging, forest clearance for oil palm plantations and agriculture, potential risk of uncontrolled fires and human exploitation, the Orangutans has encountered the issue of the habitat destruction and the need for protection has been increasing. Currently this species can only be found on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra in south-east Asia.
