An elf is a type of supernatural being in Germanic mythology and folklore. Reconstructing the early concept of an elf depends almost entirely on texts in Old English or relating to Norse mythology. Later evidence for elves appears in diverse sources such as medical texts, prayers, ballads, and folktales. Almost all surviving textual sources about elves were produced by Christians—whether Anglo-Saxon monks, medieval Icelandic poets, early modern ballad-singers, nineteenth-century folklore collectors, or even early twentieth-century fantasy authors. As with the Irish Aos Sí, beliefs in elves have, therefore, been a part of Christian cultures throughout their recorded history and there is a complex relationship between ideas about elves and mainstream Christian thought.

The reverse design by Canadian artist Jesse Koreck features a holiday elf building birdhouses in the woods. The image centres on the smiling, pointy-eared elf as he hammers the final touches on his latest creation. The tiny, bearded figure wears a green hat, coat, and pants, all trimmed with fluffy white fur. His whimsical gold boots end in long, curled toes. The elf’s skin, clothing, boots, mallet, and latest birdhouse are coloured. The elf rests on a tree stump, a small lantern glowing beside him. His toolbox rests at his feet and a chickadee on the ground nearby gazes up at him as he works. Two other bird houses hang in the quiet winter woods behind the elf. A second chickadee perches on one of these little houses. The reverse is engraved with the words “Fine Silver 9999 Argent Pur” and “Canada”, the date “2016” and the face value of “25 Dollars”. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
