Ski Chalet
A chalet, also called Swiss chalet, is a type of building or house, native to the Alpine region in Europe. The term chalet stems from Arpitan speaking part of Switzerland and French Savoy and originally referred to the hut of a herder. Many chalets in the European Alps were originally used as seasonal farms for dairy cattle which would be brought up from the lowland pastures during the summer months. The herders would live in the chalet and make butter and cheese in order to preserve the milk produced. These products would then be taken, with the cattle, back to the low valleys before the onset of the alpine winter. The chalets would remain locked and unused during the winter months. Around many chalets there are small windowless huts called mazots which were used to lock away valuable items for this period.

The reverse image by Canadian artist Stéphanie Gauvin features an idyllic mid-winter scene set in the wilderness of the Canadian Rockies. Surrounded by the snow-covered alpine landscape with its towering trees, a wood ski chalet radiates a rustic charm and warmth that was a welcome sight for one skier, whose skis stand upright in the snow as a testament to a day spent outdoors. But daylight is fading; as it descends into the horizon, the late afternoon sun casts long shadows with its colourful glow, which infuses the scene with a remarkable variety of hues that add to the overall artistry of this engraved scene.
