Its colour is as unique as it is seductive, though in fact this gemstone of all gemstones is said to protect its wearer against seduction. The amethyst is extravagance in violet. For many thousands of years, the most striking representative of the quartz family has been a jewel coveted by princes both ecclesiastical and secular. The name comes from the Ancient Greek, for the Greek words 'amethystos' mean 'not intoxicated' in translation.
The ancient Greeks and Romans wore amethyst and made drinking vessels of it in the belief that it would prevent intoxication. It is one of several forms of quartz. Amethyst is the traditional birthstone for February.

The design incorporates a transparent half-circle locket containing 15 real ametysts gemstones. The coin bears the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on its obverse.
