There have been many end of times predictions over the years, but they fortunately failed to materialize.
But in the flurry of doomsday predictions, there have been similar dire warnings about the world coming to an end from various cultures, including Native Americans, the Chinese, Egyptians and even the Irish, the supposed Mayan prophecy seems to have held the most sway with believers.
The Mayan calendar is based on advanced astronomical knowledge, the ancient Mayans studied the stars and were extremely proficient mathematicians. We tend think of ancient cultures as being somewhat primitive, but modern science has yet to truly explain how the pyramids were built, how or why the Nazca lines were created, or how the ancients built great stone structures all over the world, like Stonehenge, Macchu Picchu, or the monoliths on Easter Island.
The Mayans predicted a final event that included a solar shift, a Venus transit and violent earthquakes.
The doomsday theories stem from a stone tablet discovered in the 1960s at the archaeological site of Tortuguero in the Gulf of Mexico state of Tabasco. The Tortuguero inscription makes prophetic reference to uncertain but possibly cataclysmic events to occur in 2012, in connection with the Mayan god of war and creation. The mystery of the message in the Tortuguero inscription is complicated by an illegible ending, though some have claimed the eroded text reads "He will descend from the sky."
The experts say rather than speak of the end of the world, the Mayans had a cyclical notion of historical time. Cyclical renewal of historical time, the experts say, was not associated with or essentially linked to apocalyptic events. Rather than the end of time itself, the inscription refers to the start of a new era.
If you are worried the world will end next year based on the Mayan calendar, relax: the end of time is still far off....probably!
