Dresden Frauenkirche
“Stone Bell” – the nickname for the dome of Dresden’s Frauenkirche could not be more appropriate. Even today this monumental masterpiece of Baroque architecture is one of the largest stone domes north of the Alps with a height of 24 meters and a diameter of 26 meters. Originally the architect George Bahr had planned a copper dome sitting on wooden roof timbers, but this plan was discarded as too expensive. In the end Saxony’s Prince Elector, August the Strong, also favoured a sandstone dome. However, its massive weight of 12,000 tonnes created problems from the very beginning. Cracks appeared in the masonry early on, due to incorrect structural calculations. Iron ring girders had to be put in place to hold the supporting elements together. During the reconstruction starting in 1994 these problems were excluded at the outset with the aid of the most modern technology. The Universities of Dresden and Karlsruhe even initiated a two-year research program specifically for this purpose. Another challenge was the interior painting of the dome: The original work of the Baroque painter Giovanni Battista Grone was irrevocably destroyed. Only a few slides dating back to 1943 existed, however they offered little certainty as to the original colours. Eventually, the painter Christoph Wetzel was commissioned to reconstruct the dome painting in a manner faithful to the original style. His impressive accomplishment allows the four Evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke and John as well as the Christian virtues of faith, hope, love and charity to radiate once again in Baroque splendour.

The reverse of the coin depicts the dome of Dresden’s Frauenkirche with its splendid paintings. The coin was struck from 1 kilo of pure .999 Silver in the grading quality “Prooflike“, the highest quality possible for a coin of this enormous size. A fine antique finish effect emphasizes the motifs of the four Evangelists and the four Christian virtues. The ribs of the dome radiate in the splendor of a 24-carat Gold application. The mintmasters have succeeded brilliantly in capturing the Baroque grandeur of the interior cupola of the Frauenkirche on the circle of the coin. On the top of the reverse, the inscription: “Silver Star Coin”. On the bottom of the reverse, the inscription: “.999 Fine Silver 1 Kilo” – the weight and the fineness of Silver. On the left side, the inscription: “20” and on the right side: “15”, in this way these two numbers form the issue year: 2015. The obverse of the coin depicts the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. All around, the inscriptions: "ELIZABETH II", "COOK ISLANDS" (issue country), "100 DOLLARS" (face value).
