Niigata is located on Japan’s main land on the coast of the Sea of Japan. The major industry in Niigata is agriculture. Especially Niigata is famous for its rice production, ranking second after Hokkaido among prefectures, and also famous for Japanese sake. In winter, this area is hit by heavy snowfall. Japanese crested ibis is a special natural monument of Japan and an internationally protected bird. The scientific name of this bird is Nipponia Nippon. Sadogashima Island is famous for gold mine. Gold was mined from four hundred years ago until twenty years ago.

In this program, will be issued silver colorized coins of 47 prefectures in Japan for several years (an 8-year series). Obverse is each prefecture's own design.
