Israel Independence Day is celebrated annually on the anniversary of the establishment of the State of Israel, according to the Hebrew calendar, on 5 Iyar.
The day preceding this celebration is devoted to the memory of those who gave their lives for the achievement of the country's independence and its continued existence. This proximity is intended to remind people of the heavy price paid for independence. On this day the entire nation remembers its debt and expresses eternal gratitude to its sons and daughters who gave their lives for the achievement of the country's independence and its continued existence.

The Sea of Galilee is situated in the Jordan Rift Valley, at 212m below sea level, the lowest freshwater lake in the world. It receives its waters primarily from the Jordan River, flowing through it from north and continuing south until the Dead Sea, the lowest place on earth. Rising above the lake to the northeast are the Golan Heights and to the northwest, the Hills of the Galilee.
Its waters are pumped into the Israel National Water Carrier and provide fresh water for much of the country, even enabling the Negev desert to bloom and flourish.
The Sea of Galilee is highly significant in both Judaism and Christianity. It is mentioned several times in the Old and New Testaments. Jesus lived in the Galilee and is believed to have performed famous miracles there, including the Miracle of the Loaves & Fishes, Calming the Storm and Walking on the Water. The Sea of Galilee’s shores have many ancient historical and religious sites, including the synagogue at Capernaum, where Jesus preached, and the Mt. of the Beatitudes, where he gave the Sermon on the Mount. For this reason, the Sea of Galilee draws many Christian pilgrims to the area; in 2011 a “Jesus Trail” was inaugurated, totaling 40 miles (64 km) of holy places encircling the Sea.
The Sea of Galilee, called “Kinneret”, lyre or harp, in Hebrew, due to its shape, is also a popular vacation resort and attracts tourists from Israel and abroad. Swimming, boating, skiing, fishing and other water sports abound in its warm waters, as well as healing thermal springs. At its southern tip, where the Jordan flows south, John the Baptist is believed to have baptized early Christians and the site is in popular use for present day pilgrims as well. The first of Israel’s famous “kibbutzim” were established on the shores of the Sea of Galilee in the early 20th century and continue to flourish and prosper today, including fishing the sea and growing delicious dates on its shores.
The area is also a magnet for artists and people seeking peace, tranquility and spirituality in its waters and along its shores.
