In 1959 construction began. Fifteen years later this landmark was officially opened by Queen Elisabeth II. It counts to one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world.
The Tower Bridge
in London was opened in 1894 after a construction period of eight years. Its name comes from the Tower of London which is situated on the northern bank of the bridge. The Potala Palace
in Lhasa is a UNESCO World Heritage since 1994 and was built in several construction phases. The palace construction began in 637 by Songtsen Gampo, the king in Tibet at that time. The building was a present for his bride Princess Wen Cheng of the Chinese Tang Dynasty. In the 17th century the palace was integrated in a bigger construction. At the beginning of the 20th century the last important structural measures took place. Today the palace is used as a museum and among the Tibetan Buddhists it is considered an important pilgrimage site.
with its associated park belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage since 1996. The first construction from 1638 was destroyed during the second Siege of Vienna. Four years later Emperor Leopold I. commissioned the famous architect Johannes B. Fischer from Erlach for a representative new construction. The first plan designated a construction which should have surpassed the Palace of Versailles. Due to financial reasons this could not be realised and a smaller alternative was built, between 1696 and 1701. The contemporary architecture today originates from 1743 under Empress Maria Theresia. The palace grounds houses the oldest still existing zoo in the world, which was established in 1752.
belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage and is an old Persian residential city near Shiraz which originated around 520 B.C. Back then, on an area of 15 ha, 14 buildings were erected by Darius I and his successors. After existing for 200 years Persepolis was nearly completely destroyed by Alexander the Great. Only at the beginning of the 20th century specific excavations were made. In 1971 Persepolis was partly restored and made accessible for tourists. To this day the palace city is an identification location for many Iranians although it reaches way back into the pre Islamic period.
