Cymothoe hobarti
Cymothoe, also known as the Blood Red Glider, is an African Butterfly of medium size, named for the deep, velvet-red color on its topside. There are at least 72 different species of Cymothoe, and there is some debate about whether the two subspecies of sangaris should be split into separate species altogether. There are several other reddish species in the genus, but sangaris is decidedly the deepest colored one, varying from a brick-red to a dusty scarlet. A rainforest-dweller, the Blood Red Glider is mostly arboreal, keeping to the canopy early in the day, then descending in the afternoons to bask on bright sun-dappled leaves. Eggs are laid on Rinorea, a common relative of the violet, on which the larvae feed.
