Albrecht Durer
Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) was a German painter, printmaker, engraver, mathematician and theorist from Nuremberg. His prints established his reputation across Europe when he was still in his twenties, and he has been conventionally regarded as the greatest artist of the Northern Renaissance ever since. His vast body of work includes altarpieces and religious works, numerous portraits and self-portraits, and copper engravings.
To Dürer'sabout 60 paintings more than a thousand drawings and watercolors, about 250 woodcuts, 96 engravings, 6 etchings, and 3 dry points should be added. This would mean that the artist Dürershould not be understood or appreciated only through his painting. Dürerwas primarily a graphic artist -indubitably the greatest draftsman of his time, and among the most accomplished draftsmen that ever lived.
Dürerwas the first German artist to find new opportunities for production and distribution. Technical reproducibility, the possibility of reusing worked wood engraving blocks and copper plates as setting copies and printing high print runs, was something he used to a degree previously unknown.
He was the first to introduce the production of printed graphics in his own publishing business on an equal footing with the running of a painter's workshop.

The coin reverse depicts a famous Albrecht Durer work as etched copper: the Rhinoceros. Dürer used an Indian rhinoceros, as his subject. Dürer’s Rhinoceros woodcut was widely distributed and appeared in several versions. Despite anatomical flaws, it dominated the European image of an Indian Rhinoceros for centuries and has remained popular up until today. The coin’s obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the monetary denomination.
