SIR GALAHAD OF THE ROUND TABLE - COOK ISLANDS 2009

The coin’s reverse portrays a coloured image of Sir Galahad and his horse, as conceived by George Frederick Watts. Sir Galahad, sometimes referred to as Galeas or Galath, is a knight of King Arthur's Round Table and one of the three achievers of the Holy Grail in Arthurian legend. He is the illegitimate son of Lancelot and Elaine of Corbenic, and is renowned for his gallantry and purity.
Issued as Cook Islands legal tender, the coin bears the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on its obverse.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY


	Sir Galahad Upon reaching adulthood, Galahad is reunited with his father Lancelot, who knights him even though Lancelot is not a king. He is then brought to King Arthur's court at Camelot during Pentecost. Galahad is accompanied by a very old knight, who immediately leads him over to the Round Table, and unveils his seat at the Siege Perilous. This place had been kept vacant for the sole person who would accomplish the quest of the Holy Grail; for anyone else sitting there, it would prove to be immediately fatal. Sir Galahad survives the event, witnessed by King Arthur and his knights. The king upon realizing the greatness of this new knight leads him out to the river where sword lay in a stone with an inscription reading “Never shall man take me hence but only he by whose side I ought to hang; and he shall be the best knight of the world.” Galahad accomplishes this with ease, and King Arthur swiftly proclaims him to be the greatest knight ever. He is promptly invited to join the Order of the Round Table, and after an ethereal vision of the Holy Grail, the quest to find the famous object is set. Knights of the Round Table Knights of the Round Table were those men awarded the highest order of Chivalry at the Court of King Arthur in the literary cycle the Matter of Britain. The table at which they met was created to have no head or foot, representing the equality of all the members. Knights Code of Chivalry A knight was expected to have not only the strength and skills to face combat in the violent Middle Ages but was also expected to temper this aggressive side of a knight with a chivalrous side to his nature. There was not an authentic Knights Code of Chivalry as such - it was a moral system which went beyond rules of combat and introduced the concept of Chivalrous conduct - qualities idealized by knighthood, such as bravery, courtesy, honor, and gallantry toward women.
