SILVER COIN LABRADOR RETRIEVER WORKING DOGS TUVALU 2010
A series not to be missed by dog lovers, Working Dogs gets underway with this delightful release honouring the unique qualities of the Labrador Retriever. By purchasing this coin, you are making a donation of $1 to the RSPCA Australia, which relies on community support to provide care for animals in need.
WORKING DOGS - LABRADOR - 2010
The coin’s reverse portrays a Labrador Retriever and a puppy in colour. A gentle, devoted and playful breed, the Labrador Retriever’s great temperament is matched by initiative, concentration and a strong desire to please. Ideally suited to a number of working roles, it is best-known as an assistance dog providing invaluable mobility and independence to visually-impaired people. As well as a decorative pattern of paw prints, the coin’s reverse also includes the inscriptions WORKING DOGS and LABRADOR RETRIVER – GUIDE DOG. In the background, a silhouette of a Labrador Retriever working as a guide dog.
The reverse of each coin includes The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark. The Ian-Rank Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the year-date appears on the obverse of each coin.
BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Friendly & Hard-Working Labrador Retriever
The Labrador Retriever (also Labrador, or Lab for short) is one of several kinds of retriever, a type of gun dog. A breed characteristic is its webbed paws for swimming, useful for the breed's original purpose of retrieving fishing nets. This and their subsequent use as hunting companions gave them the name retriever. The dogs of this breed are very loving, kind and compassionate to their masters. The Labrador is the most popular breed of dog (by registered ownership) in the world, and is, by a large margin, the most popular breed by registration in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. It is also the most popular breed of assistance dog in Canada, the United States, Australia, United Kingdom and many other countries, as well as being widely used by police and other official bodies for their detection and working abilities. Typically, Labradors are athletic, and love to swim, play catch and fetch, and are good with young children.
The modern Labrador's ancestors originated on the island of Newfoundland, now part of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The breed emerged over time from the St. John's Water Dog, (also a founding breed of the Newfoundland dog) through ad-hoc breedings by early settlers in the mid to late 16th century. Labradors are a well-balanced, friendly and versatile breed, adaptable to a wide range of functions as well as making very good pets. Labradors instinctively enjoy holding objects and even hands or arms in their mouths, which they can do with great gentleness (a Labrador can carry an egg in its mouth without breaking it!). They are also known to have a very soft feel to the mouth, as a result of being bred to retrieve game such as waterfowl. The Labrador Retriever's coat repels water to some extent, thus facilitating the extensive use of the dog in waterfowl hunting.
