The reverse of the coin presents a finely detailed engraving that captures the natural beauty of sugar maple (Acer saccharum) leaves in all their intricate beauty. A true-to-life recreation of the leaf's silhouette, the coin's unusual shape provides a fitting canvas for this celebration of a Canadian icon, whose irregular edges and five palmate lobes have been painstakingly replicated through a labourintensive process. Its fall colours are brought to life through the skilful use of GRADIENCE technology—a translucent colour application that allows for a true-to-life gradation. Moving from the leaf's tips towards its centre, the fiery red softly fades and gradually transitions to the natural radiance of the gold coin's surface. On the centre of the reverse, the inscriptions: "200 DOLLARS" – the face value and "2017" – the year of issue.
