The black-capped chickadee (Poecile atricapillus) is a small, nonmigratory, North American songbird that lives in deciduous and mixed forests. It is a passerine bird in the tit family Paridae. It is the state bird of both Maine and Massachusetts in the United States, and the provincial bird of New Brunswick in Canada. It is well known for its capacity to lower its body temperature during cold winter nights as well as its good spatial memory to relocate the caches where it stores food, and its boldness near humans (sometimes feeding from the hand).
The reverse of the coin is designed by Canadian artist Jean-Charles Daumas deftly and combines sumptuous colours and intricate engraving that leaves one with an appreciation for nature’s beauty. The selective application of colour recreates the soft pink and white hues of the magnolia (Magnoliaceae) blossoms, which evoke a warm, sunny day in May. One can imagine the musical call of the blackcapped chickadee (Poecile atricapillus) filling the air as it sits perched on the branch; engraved in outstanding detail, the diminutive chickadee presents its right-side profile to allow the viewer to study its body shape and narrow tail. On top of the reverse, the inscription: “10 DOLLARS” – the face value. The obverse of the coin depicts the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions: “CANADA” – the issue country, “D·G·REGINA” – Dei Gratia Regina, “2017” – the year of issue and “ELIZABETH II” – the name of the Queen.
