The reverse of the coins features an incredibly designed Taniwha, subject of many Maori myths and legends, portrayed emerging from turbulent waters which were said to be its favoured habitat. On top of the reverse of the Silver coin, the inscription: "KOTAHI TARA" – the face value in Maori and on the bottom, the inscription: "ONE DOLLAR" – the face value in English. On top of the reverse of the Gold coin, the inscription: "TEKAU TARA" – the face value in Maori and on the bottom, the inscription: "TEN DOLLARS" – the face value in English. The obverse of both coins depicts the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions: "ELIZABETH II" – the name of the Queen, "NEW ZEALAND" – the issue country and "2017" – the year of issue.
