Liberty, in philosophy, involves free will as contrasted with determinism. In politics, liberty consists of the social and political freedoms to which all community members are entitled. In theology, liberty is freedom from the effects of “sin, spiritual servitude, worldly ties”. Generally, liberty is distinctly differentiated from freedom in that freedom is primarily, if not exclusively, the ability to do as one wills and what one has the power to do; whereas liberty concerns the absence of arbitrary restraints and takes into account the rights of all involved. As such, the exercise of liberty is subject to capability and limited by the rights of others.
The reverse of each coin features a different representation of Liberty, in Ruthenium and Gold plated. The first coin issued in 1986 features the Statue of Liberty and the inscriptions: “LIBERTY” – the name of the coin, “ELLIS ISLAND GATEWAY TO AMERICA” – the depiction of the coin and the main entry point for immigrants who landed in the United States, “IN GOD WE TRUST” – the national motto of the United States of America and “1986” – the year of issue. The second coin issued in 1987 features the American Constitution and the inscriptions: “CONSTITUTION 200th ANNIVERSARY” – the anniversary of the constitution, “1987” – the year of issue, “LIBERTY” – the name of the coin, “IN GOD WE TRUST” – the national motto of the United States of America and “The People” – the ensuring words of the American amendments. The third coin issued in 1988 features the Olympic Torches and the inscriptions: “OLYMPIAD” – the Olympic Games, “1988” – the year of issue, “LIBERTY” – the name of the coin and “IN GOD WE TRUST” – the national motto of the United States of America. The fourth coin issued in 1989 features the Armed Freedom statue of the Congress and the inscriptions: “LIBERTY” – the name of the coin, “1989” – the year of issue and “IN GOD WE TRUST” – the national motto of the United States of America.
