BATTLE OF POLTAVA 1709 AD
Occurring on the 27 June 1709, the most famous battle of the Great Northern War resulted in a decisive victory by Peter the Great of Russia over Charles XII of Sweden. The outcome saw Russia emerge as one of the leading nations in Europe and marked the decline of Sweden as a Great Power. The Battle of Poltava was the most crucial of battles in the Great Northern War, which lasted 21 years. It is said to have started the end of Sweden’s military dominance in Europe. Russia formed an alliance with Denmark, Saxony and Poland thereby forcing Sweden into signing a peace treaty in Nystad on its conditions. But the road to victory was long and difficult as Russian forces went through a humiliating defeat at the Battle of Narva and suffered defeat in Poland and Saxony.
